Where’s the “any” key?

Back to work. Dressed for an arctic expedition, ready for the sub-zero temperature of my office. R2OB1 is sitting opposite me swathed in her scarf and pashmina, going for the Peruvian Sherpa look.

Make Poverty History

Fighting chronic compassion fatigueI can already hear the groaning through the modems, “Not another campaign for Africa!”, “We’ve already done Africa!” or even “Why bother?” Fair question when you consider that despite continuous aid, life in African countries is getting worse. Is there a hole in the bucket? Nope. The first problem is debt relief. At

Snow and Mosquitoes??

Imagine the scene. A small child sleeping fitfully under crumpled bedclothes. Silence. Zoom in to a head shot. High-pitched whine fades in and out. Child listlessly swats the air without waking. Another high-pitched whine, which stops abruptly. Pull back. Silence. Zoom in for close head shot to see a mosquito feeding on the child’s cheek.

Woke up

  • Hi Ria!

Never having lived in Malarial areas more than a week at a time, my pet peeve about mosquitoes has to be the little whine in the dead of the night.

    Drives … ME … NUTS!

    Ahem

  • Ria… thank you so much for this information-rich post on mosquitos. I love this stuff. You write beautifully, your site is gorgeous, and your illustration is phenomenal! So glad to have run into you. I’ll read you often. Blogmarked and blogrolled. :)

And you think YOU’VE got no one to talk to?

I attended a ceremony this morning with five language simultaneous interpreting. It was fun switching from one language to another, although I missed the punchline to the only joke of the day because I was on the Mandarin channel. I wonder if the interpreters are chosen for the quality of their voice – all five this

It’s true that “next blog” does show more than the monolingualism on blogexplosion and blogclicker. I particularly enjoy the Filipino and Singaporean blogs with their mix of English/Tagalog and English/Mandarin.

  • That’s one of the things I like about the “next blog” button in blogspot.

They take you to sites of ANY language, and there’s a lot of spanish, portugese, and asian languages. Some french, some german, some scandinavian languages.

Sometimes I can understand them, sometimes I babelfish them (it’s usually quite funny, but not very enlightening), and most times, I have no clue.
