You're right, MB. I read the beginning of the article too quickly. As you say, it's pretty obvious he wasn't a cop.

You're also right about the negotiating tactic of aiming high, but it seemed so unrealistic to me to begin at 75% (plus the rest). I wouldn't take such a demand as serious enough to come to the negotiating table, but maybe that's a difference of culture.

Ok... interesting post. Re the wage demands, you may find that the salarys of the policemen are really low to start out with. Also, if you aim for the sky, you fall on the treetops, but if you aim for the treetops, you fall on the ground.

Re the kidnappers, I didn't get the impression from reading the story that Mr. Brown was a policeman. I mean, it was his wife and child that were kidnapped, right. Nowhere in the story does it say he is a policeman. In fact, it seems to suggest that he was definitely NOT a policeman.

Apparently Mr. Brown lives near to the scene of the kidnapping and so was able to get there before the coppers :
see the "that he immediately left his home in nearby Constant Gardens" above.

Apart from that, well, I am not sure what was meant by conflicting reports.

Why do you assume Mr. Brown was a cop?
