Call me stupid

It’s heading for 1 am. About to shut down for the night, I carelessly copied over the whole folder of my current editing job in progress onto my USB stick, thinking that I’d be super efficient by having access to the files during the day tomorrow. Two seconds later I realized to my horror that I had already been super efficient by working on the document directly on my stick. By copying over the original version of the file, I deleted all of this evening’s work.

I don’t know whether to cry or give myself a slap for being so stuuuupid!

  1. Very little comfort in such times, I know, but maybe a great occasion to find the motivation to invest some time in a proper versioning system :-)
When done properly, the day-to-day use of a versioning system is completely transparent (stuff gets checked-in on the versioning server, each time the application saves a new version) and will not only save your ass if any such problem ever occurs again, but also brings all sorts of advantages (such as universal access from places connected to the net, which is pretty much everywhere nowadays)…
Versioning: not just for code after all!

  2. Ahhh, not that stupid…. I could have gone home at 12 today… Finished typing a ‘gespreksverslag’ which took me 3 hours to make. Deleted the whole thing, still don’t know how that happened.. So it happens to the best of us :-)

  4. Have you ever considered adding more videos to your blog posts to keep the readers more entertained? I mean I just read through the entire article of yours and it was quite good but since I’m more of a visual learner.
